Meme: Book Q&A

On Tuesday's I usually participate in Top Ten Tuesday hosted by The Broke and Bookish. Every week the ladies over there come up with a subject and you have to write your top ten. This weeks topic actually gave a lot of space as you could choose between "Books you wish were taught in school" or "Combine a contemporary with a classic" Both these gave me problems. I am Dutch and have never been a fan of Dutch literature. Meaning that I cannot seriously come up with 10 books that I wished were taught. The other problems is that I do not like classics or very few so I could not come up with a top ten on that either.

Sooooo what to do with this empty Tuesday.... well Lianne over at Caffeinatedlife  taged me in this bookish meme with questions and I thought it was fun to answer those. Am curious if I still think it is fun at the end of the ride.

Book Q&A Rules
1. Post these rules
2. Post a photo of your favourite book cover
3. Answer the questions below
4. Tag a few people to answer them too
5. Go to their blog/twitter and tell them you’ve tagged them
6. Make sure you tell the person who tagged you that you’ve taken part!

To start off, favourite book cover?
Are you kidding me!?! I am weak when it comes to covers. If it is nice I drool and take the book home just because of it. I have millions of covers I love... well maybe not millions but just one favorite????

What are you reading right now?
Top Down by Jim Lehrer

Do you have any idea what you’ll read when you’re done with that?
Yes I am one of those terrible people who plans books which means I am pretty sure about my upcoming 25 reads.

What five books have you always wanted to read but haven’t got round to?
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Frey
The Eyre Affair
Sherlock Holmes
The Arrival

What magazines do you have in your bathroom/ lounge right now?
Nothing. I do not read magazines.

What’s the worst book you’ve ever read?
Honestly, I did not finish it but I still get upset thinking about the few pages of Lord of the Flies by William Golding

What book seemed really popular but you didn’t like?
The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley. I was actually pulled by (YES I KNOW) the cover and the synopsis but while reading it was totally not what I had expected. Most people around me actually love the book and rest of the series and cannot stop raving about it.

What’s the one book you always recommend to just about everyone?
I get asked for recommendations often but I feel it is always personal. If people drop they like fantasy I will tell them to read "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss. For thriller I will usually end up with King and detectives I try to push Elizabeth George. I do not recommend books because I liked them I recommend books because I think they will like them.

Where do you usually get your books?
I don't really have a usually spot. I search for the cheapest version with the look I like. I love to browse in second hand book stores too. It is more that if there is a book store I need to get in and I will try my best not to buy something.

When you were little, did you have any particular reading habits?
I was always hidden in a corner and preferably with my thumb in my mouth ( I did not stop that until I turned 13 and my thumb and braces did not fit in my mouth at the same time)

What’s the last thing you stayed up half the night reading because it was too good to put down?
The last time I stayed up reading was during Dewey's Read-A-Thon. Unfortunately my health does not allow me often to take the risk reading trough the night despite how exciting the book is. Usually this means I go to bed early though so I got some reasonable amount of pages left for the next day.

Have you ever “faked” reading a book?
Depends on what you mean with this. I never say I read a book I did not read. I do skim books when I loose interest in the story and feel that if I read every second or third page and do not miss a thing that I officially read it.

Have you ever bought a book just because you liked the cover?
OW YES!! Though I usually end up liking it. Perfect example is The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I am not much of a fantasy reader (usually stay away from imaginary worlds) but I had to have this one because of the cover (and it was the budget deal for 10 euro's for 700+ pages)

What was your favourite book when you were a child?
I had various loves but my favorites where The Children of Noisy Village by Astrid Lindgren and De Kameleon van H. Roos

What book changed your life?
The Brothers Lionheart by Astrid Lindgren. I read that book 12 times as a child and it was the first book that actually made me cry every time I read it

What is your favourite passage from a book?
My favorite is actually very recent but keeps floating in my head. It is from Robert Goolricks "Heading out to Wonderful"

“When you're young, and you head out to wonderful, everything is fresh and bright as a brand new penny, but before you get to wonderful you're going to have to pass through all right. And when you get to all right, stop and take a good long look, because that may be as far as you're ever going to go.”

Who are your top five favourite authors?

  • Elizabeth George
  • John Sandford
  • Thea Beckman
  • Patrick Rothfuss
  • Neil Gaiman

What book has no one heard about but should read?
Death, The Devil and the Goldfish by Andrew Buckley

What books are you an ‘evangelist’ for?
As said with the recommendations I am not the person to force books on people because I liked them. I have a few books per genre I think people should read like "The Name of the Wind" by Rothfuss, anything by Elizabeth George and current favourites are The Night Rainbow by Claire King and Lost and Found by Tom Winter. But if you ask me this question next month I will push other books.

What are your favourite books by a first time author?
The Life List by Laurie Nelson Spielman
Lost and Found by Tom Winter
The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh
Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

What is your favourite classic book?
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

Five other notable mentions?
Carlos Ruiz Zafón, The Shadow of the Wind
Charles Lewinsky, Terugkeer ongewenst
Elizabeth Kostova, The Historian < Mary Ann Shaffer, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
Mitch Albom, The Time Keeper

Astrid Lindgren is my favourite children's author ever. We had more than 6 of her books at home and I read them all COUNTLESS times. The Children of Noisy Village was (and is) my special favourite. It's actually right next to me on the shelf now because I brought 2 Lindgren books with me when I visited parents' home a while back :)

Great answers, Ciska, I enjoyed reading them =)

You've mentioned a number of titles I've been meaning to check out: The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Frey, The Eyre Affair (this one has been recommended to me by so many!), The Language of Flowers, The Time Keeper...

I've never read any of Elizabeth George's works *blushes* Will need to fix that in the near future! Which of her books would you recommend I start with first?

That's a wonderful quote from Heading out to Wonderful =)
