Review: The Ruby Brooch, Katherine Lowry Logan

The Ruby Brooch Katherine Lowry Logan
As the lone survivor of a car crash that killed her parents, paramedic Kit MacKlenna makes a startling discovery that further alters her life. A faded letter and a well-worn journal reveal that she was abandoned on her father’s doorstep as a baby. The only clues to her identity are a blood-splattered shawl, a locket that bears a portrait of a nineteenth-century man, and a Celtic brooch with mystical powers. Following notes in her late father’s journal, Kit sets out on a quest to solve the murders of her birth parents and discover her true identity. Under the guise of the Widow MacKlenna, Kit calls on the power of the ruby brooch and is swept back in time to Independence, Missouri, in the year 1852.
Upon arriving in the past, she meets Cullen Montgomery, an egotistical Scotsman with a penchant for seducing widows. The San Francisco-bound lawyer happens to resemble the ghost who has haunted Kit since childhood. She quickly finds the Bach-humming, Shakespeare-quoting man to be over-bearing and his intolerance for liars threatens her quest.
If she can survive his accusations and resist his tempting and passionate embrace, she might be able to find the answers she seeks and return home to a new life without changing history or leaving her heart on the other side of time.

Katherine is a marathoner and an avid reader who turned her love of reading into a passion for writing. A graduate of Rowan University in New Jersey, she earned a BA in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice. Following graduation, Katherine attended the Philadelphia Institute for Paralegal Training earning a General Practice Certification. She returned to Central Kentucky and worked for twenty years as a paralegal and law firm office manager.
Katherine's life is filled by spending time with her grandchildren, writing, and running.

I picked up this book as a joint reading organized by Isi I was intrigued by the time travel idea in the synopsis. When I decided to join this reading I was expecting an interesting book on time travel with some romance but it was more romance than I had anticipated. At first I was disappointed but the writing style and the story are so catchy that it deserved a bit more love. So I took a moment to reset my expectations and after I read this book with much pleasure.
Kit is a woman who knows how things work in the world. She is educated and is able to save herself. After surviving an accident where the rest of her family dies she is trying to get it all together when she finds out about the secret and the time travel. I love how she prepares herself to go back in time. I really enjoyed that she did not change when she was there. She does try to behave as is expected from a woman in 1852 but will not let herself be overruled by it all. I really liked Cullen too. Usually the male person in a romance story is a bit rude and a "bad" boy. Cullen did not feel like that. Yes he was a real 1852 male but he clearly has manners and if he is rude it is within reason.
Many questions in this story stay unanswered until the last chapters and the answers are very surprising too. The whole atmosphere was done very nice. I really felt the rural life while they where traveling the trail and how difficult it was. The only thing that was a bit disturbing in the story was in the start where you get dropped in the story and it takes a while to understand who Elliot and Scott where exactly which kept bothering me.

Historical characters can be tough. I sometimes get frustrated when they act so differently from what was expected in their time period. I'm glad you enjoyed this one!
