Top Ten Tuesday: Words/Topics That Instantly Make Me Buy/Pick Up A Book

top ten tuesday buttonTop Ten Tuesday is a weekly hosted by The Broke and Bookish. Every week the girls from the Broke and Bookish come up with a subject and I will try to find 10 results combined with that weeks topic.

This weeks topic made me think very hard. Words or topics that make me pick up or buy a book. I am not sure if it are words. I am more of a cover freak. First the cover, second the title and third the synopsis. So I will show you some books I picked up due to the beautiful cover combined with an interesting title and synopsis.

  • de naam van de wind Patrick Rothfuss cover
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
I am not much of a fantasy reader but the cover of this book caught my eye. I did like the title too. I grew up near the coast and the wind does have a special meaning for me. After reading the synopsis I had some doubts about getting the book but I just had to have this cover on my shelves. I decided to give it a try and read it and it is one of the best books I read in my life too.
  • The Jelly Bean Crisis Jolene Stockman
The Jelly Bean Crisis by Jolene Stockman
Another book fist picked on its lovely and beautiful cover. Next the title made me laugh.
  • The Invention of Hugo Cabret Brian Selznick cover
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
Look at that pretty cover. I wanted this colorful thing on my bookshelves even before I knew how pretty it was from the inside.
  • The Shadow of the Wind Carlos Ruis Zafón cover
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruis Zafón
Maybe wind in the title is a word that makes me pick up a book. I now have two books with wind in the title. I loved the serenity in this picture.
  • The Age of Miracles Karen Thompson Walker cover
The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker
I saw this cover in a commercial folder and it caught my eye. The birds and the colors on this cover. The title in Dutch is less exciting compared to the English. The free translation would be "We where here" but still I could not forget about the book

Looking trough my book list I can actually do find some topics that return.
  • Jack the Ripper inspired books
  • Police/detective books
  • World War 2
  • Books where people look for answers on questions or symbols from the past
  • Books about books

Those are some pretty covers, especially the Jelly Bean one. For me, synopsis comes first, then everything else because no matter how pretty the cover is, I don't want to read a lame story!

Oh you get some lovely covers where you are, Ciska! I hadn't seen that one for The Name of the Wind before, or The Age of Miracles (it's much nicer than mine!). Your copy of The Shadow of the Wind is similar to mine but I like the composition of your seven better I think. :)

The Jelly Bean Crisis looks like fun! I've only seen the movie of Hugo Cabret - is the book good?

My TTT.
