Top Ten Tuesday: What makes me consider not finishing a book.

top ten buttonTop Ten Tuesday is a weekly hosted by The Broke and Bookish. Every week the girls from the Broke and
Bookish come up with a subject and I will try to find 10 results combined with that weeks topic.

This weeks topic talks about what turns me off when reading a book. When I first read this topic I was thinking it would be easy and I would make a list of twenty but considering it more careful now it might not be that long.

When the Supernatural stuff gets awkward.
I know it often is awkward already but if the story just does not count up or the rules change I am done.

When I cannot connect to the characters
I can actually put a book down when I cannot muster up any feeling for any of the characters

When the language contains to much dialect
I am Dutch and most of my books are English. If the English has to much dialect or slang I do not understand or really have to work for to understand I easily give up on a book.

When the story does not add up
Situations where the nice guy suddenly does something very bad and it is accepted as normal and stuff like that.

To many points of view
I love to settle in the head of a character so I hate changing points of view. I can handle a few but if every chapter things change I cannot get into the story.

Long and dreadful
Really slow stories told in long sentences. That combination does not work for me. I do notice I have more problems with this if the book has a dark atmosphere.

This is pretty much what I can come up with. The above turn off's do not always mean I wont finish a book but it does make me consider at some point of it is worth finishing it.

Even though I'm American and read in English, I also sometimes have trouble with dialect, especially if it's poorly written and distracts from the story. I've also had trouble reading British writers at times when they use slang or dialect, so you are not alone!

Great list. I don't like when I don't connect to the characters, and story not adding up is just so weird! Makes me feel like I forgot something or misread a few things. Awkward.

I know you as a person who hardly ever DNF a book, so this list has to be a big deal :) I agree with long and dreadful (like 100yrs hehe)
